Expo Eastern Africa 2010
East African Fishing Industry Context
Concerted efforts by stakeholders in sustaining
fisheries in East Africa have evolved from being a locally
based initiative to a regionally undertaking. Fisheries collaboration
in East Africa is one of oldest in Africa dating back 1928
when it was recommended that collaborative lake-wide authority
for regulation and collection of fisheries statistics be established.
The countries of East Africa have been keen to develop the
fishing industry. These efforts have received support from
international development partners including banks.
The Lake Victoria fisheries alone supports
